Happening Now: Summer Of Creativity
It’s not too late to join us in our summer group study, this is week 2! For this year’s Summer of Creativity, we are heading “back to school” and will explore a new topic each week that relates surface pattern design to a different school subject like math, history, and science. And we’ll be doing so together, as a group-study, through a dedicated forum and live events.The course will run for 6 weeks, from Monday July 11th-Friday August 19th, 2022. WGSN access is included as part of this class on a first-come first-served basis, with 290 spots available–so be sure to read our welcome email on July 11th and sign up early! Upcoming Event: Exploring Photoshop with Sherry London
On June 20th Sherry discussed how to create wavy patterns from a photo with a few filters using Photoshop. This is a very unique approach to creating a pattern. You can watch the recording right here. This Monday July 18th at 11am EST Sherry will add on to her June tutorial, by showing us how to work with color channels and incorporate Illustrator with line work from her wavy patterns. If you have questions you can ask them in the tech talk forum and tag @prancingpixel
Upcoming Event: Gust Expert Presentation
This Wednesday July 20th at 1pm EST Tracy Schifeling will present how math influences pattern design. This presentation ties in with our second week of the Summer of Creativity’s theme of mathematics. Tracy is a data scientist who also designs patterns for textiles and stationary. You can find a recent feature interview with Tracy right here from Pattern Observer. Tracy has lots of tutorials about how mathematics create repeating patterns on her blog, check it out. This should be a fascinating presentation, see you there!
Upcoming Event: Illustrator Live with Laura Coyle
On Tuesday July 26th at 11am EST Laura will be in the TDL for another Illustrator Live. In June Laura presented how to make trend boards using Illustrator. This tutorial is also super helpful if you want to create a collection board or simply place patterns in progress all together in a layout. Watch it here.

Chelsea’s most recent Live One Hour Challenge was July 6th you can participate with this link. You will need a drawing medium of your choice and your phone to take photos of your artwork. Here is the link to the previous Live One Hour Challenge from June. You will need to bring paper and your favorite drawing tools in at least five different colors.

This Friday June 24th Guest Expert Kristine Go of Pattern Curator presented on how she creates her amazing trend boards. You can watch the talk with this link. This June, for Trend Month, we are focusing on how to successfully research trends, create mood boards for clients, and share ways to incorporate trends in to your portfolio to sell more art. When a client asks for a trend board at your next design opportunity, you will confidently and quickly be able to give them the vision they desire.
Chelsea’s Challenge: Denim
For our latest Chelsea’s Challenge we are doing something we’ve never done before and focusing on designing for denim! There are a ton of print trends happening in the world of denim right now, and some interesting technological developments that are helping to push the denim industry in a more Earth-friendly direction.

Weekly Art Critiques. Please join the TDL community on THURSDAY at 1 PM Eastern for a live art critique. Our art critiques are fun events where Lab members come together to review artwork and ask questions about pattern design, marketing, and sales. A registration link will be emailed the morning of the critique and will also be posted in our Weekly Art Critique forum. Textile Design Lab members can watch past critiques here.
