New Tutorial: Building a Stripe Repeat with Small Motifs Using Distribute Commands

This tutorial covers how to build an evenly spaced stripe repeat out of small motifs using Photoshop’s Distribute commands. Lab member Mary McMurrer gave Chelsea the idea for this tutorial, so thank you Mary! The video is under 20 minutes and gives an idea of what to do if you have a set of motifs that you want to turn into a repeating vertical stripe with even spacing between the motifs. We hope it will be a useful addition to your design toolkit!

You can check out the tutorial here.

If you ever have an idea for a tutorial that you want covered feel free to email Chelsea at [email protected]!

Recording Posted: Painting, Murals, Sculpture, and More with Hello Kirsten

Our February Guest Expert was Canadian artist Hello Kirsten.  She is a muralist and fine artist working in Toronto, Canada. She mixes patterns and interesting color palettes to create vibrant large murals and smaller detailed sculptural works and paintings. Kirsten has participated in numerous exhibitions, residencies, art fairs, and presentations. It was a delight to hear about her process and creative journey as well as get a tour of her studio. You should definitely read her interview on the Pattern Observer blog, she has very thorough answers to our questions and lots of good tips for finding success as a creative. Here is the recording of her presentation.

Upcoming Monthly Events: Community Conversations

Our first community conversation event was February 16th. Amanda Rouse hosted and shared her experience using the Print On Demand company Kin Custom for custom printed apparel. There were lots of questions about selling artwork through your website, so be sure to check that out here if you are curious. Feel free to tag @manders11386 with any questions you have on this topic. Through Community Conversations, we will come together for one hour through zoom to discuss a specific topic. A different member will host each live session.  The host will kick off the hour by speaking about a particular topic or a recent industry experience. We would then open up the floor to other members to share their experiences or ask questions.  The goal of these sessions is to highlight member experiences or lessons learned and create an opportunity for members to come together and chat about a specific topic. Topics could include social media, print on demand, freelancing, SEO, artistic endeavors, being a working mom, staying creative, etc. These will be very informal conversations, and keynote presentations are not necessary.  The host will also have the opportunity to be featured on our Pattern Observer blog and social media channels. If you are interested in sharing an experience please submit here.

Chelsea’s Challenge: Pop Punk

For this month’s Chelsea’s Challenge we will be playing with the fun “Pop Punk” trend that applies to all fashion markets right now (women’s, men’s, juniors and childrenswear.) There are three different directions you can explore within this trend, including punk academia, graffiti, and goth. You might also mix and match from the trends to create a unique pattern collection that still falls under the “punk” umbrella. Find all the fun right here.

Interested in being published on the Pattern Observer blog?
