Hello there Lab members!
We just released our first SURTEX 2018 design brief and we are thrilled to dive into this project as a community. All the details are outlined in the brief and are due by 11:59 PM Eastern time, Monday, March 19th, 2018
Please let us know if you have any questions and we can’t wait to see what you create this week!
Design Opportunity with Pattern Observer Studio – Florals for Surtex!
We are so pleased to announce that Chelsea and I will be attending SURTEX for the first time this coming May, and we’ll be bringing a select amount of Textile Design Lab member artwork along with us!
This is going to be an exceptional experience, as we will be able to present some of our members’ artwork to the buyers and licensees attending the show and also have the opportunity to meet so many people within the community which we hope will lead to future opportunities for our members as well.
Would you like us to take your work to the show? You can read more about this opportunity here.
In this new video tutorial Chelsea walks you step by step through the process of creating a loose, painterly abstract floral with gold accents. She’ll show you how to combine hand-painted motifs with digital painting effects to achieve an end result like the one you see in the image on the left.
If you are struggling to get started with this month’s design challenge try creating an abstract floral using Chelsea’s technique and then apply the “Recycled” theme to your final collection.
Chelsea’s Challenge: Recycle
This month’s theme is all about recycling–reworking old prints or creating patterns to be pieced together and used in unexpected ways. We provide two different directions for you to take, but there are so many different ways to run with this theme. This is a fun opportunity to create something new, or use that pattern that was too difficult to put into repeat or that you could never figure out the right layout.
This month let’s come together as a group and design for the children’s market. We have provided two playful color palettes, though as always, these are provided as a jumping off point and it is not required that you use them.
Weekly Art Critique Please join Michelle for our live art critique held THURSDAY at 1 PM Eastern. This is a fun event where Lab members come together to review artwork and ask questions about pattern design, marketing and sales. A registration link will be emailed out early on Thursday morning and will also be posted in our Weekly Art Critique forum. Textile Design Lab members can watch past critiques here.
