Chelsea’s Challenge: Soft Glow
For this month’s Chelsea’s Challenge we are going to focus on a burgeoning trend story from WGSN that has emerged as the next iteration of the massively popular tie-dye trend. This trend includes soft gradients, blur and glow effects, and overall has a distinctly digital look. It has been forecast for women’s and men’s apparel as well as home decor and stationery, so feel free to gear your collection toward whatever market most excites you.
This design challenge includes trend insights and a downloadable color palette.
Community Event: Ultimate Guide to Repeats
Last week we kicked off our new Ultimate Guide to Repeats course, but it’s not too late to join!
In the Ultimate Guide To Repeats Group Study, you’ll have access to a toolbox of techniques that you can use to create more interesting, professional repeats that agents, studios, and clients are looking for in today’s market.
This course has been updated and the new videos will be added to the Lab as the course progresses. This group study is designed to keep you motivated and feeling supported as you master repeats!
This event is FREE for all Textile Design Lab members and the first lesson will be released on Monday, October 25th. Members can register here.
Home Decor Month!
In October, we gathered together as a community to explore the home decor market and become more informed designers! We achieved this goal through three guest expert presentations. Jenny Bova kicked things off with an interiors industry overview (recording here) and a second presentation on wallcovering and murals (recording here). Then we learned about designing for bedding from Laura Olivia (recording here).
Currently, the community is working on their home decor pattern collections and you are welcome to join in the fun! Chelsea created two in-depth design briefs and you are welcome to choose one and get started. You can explore the briefs here.

Recording Posted: LIVE One Hour Challenge
On Wednesday, October 27th Chelsea treated us to another inspiring Live One Hour Challenge! In this session, we drew a series of motifs that we can use in future pattern concepts. All you need is paper and a drawing tool of your choice!
Recording Posted: The Surface Pattern Design Journey by Rachael King
We are pleased to welcome Rachael King as our Textile Design Lab guest expert of the month!
On Monday, September 20th Rachael shared her story “to illustrate how our Surface Pattern Design journey can take us in so many directions and how I have shaped my business to offer many income streams including licensing, branded product, Spoonflower, book sales, tutoring, and guest talks.”
It was an enlightening presentation and the recording is posted here.
