December Illustrator Live with Laura Coyle
A message from Laura, “Thanks to all who participated in the November session, where we talked about working in Recolor Artwork, and we went over some of the new updates in Illustrator 2020. If you missed it, see the recording under Learning Center > Explore Illustrator.
Our next meeting is Tuesday December 17th at 11 am Eastern.
I’ll be talking about using the Image Trace feature in Illustrator, especially as part of a workflow with Procreate and Fresco, for getting your textured linework from those drawing apps into Illustrator vector form.
I’ll also take your questions, just add them to this thread.

The second event will be held on Thursday, December 19 at 10am Eastern and a link will be sent out on the morning of the chat.
Sherry would love to gather some questions and topics in advance of the chat. What’s something you are struggling with in Photoshop? Is there something new in Photoshop 2020 that you need help with? Please let us know in this forum thread!
Chelsea’s Challenge: The Twenties
It’s no surprise with the decade nearing an end and the start of the ’20s on the horizon that signs of a 1920s style renaissance abound–velvet, feathers, fringe, sequins and intricate beading are all over the Pre-Fall 2020 runways! Mary Katrantzou, Valentino, Giorgio Armani and many other recent runway shows are a great starting point for some high-fashion inspiration and showcase some playful examples of giving this trend a fresh, modern spin–these aren’t your grandma’s flappers!
As you design you might look to classic Art Deco design icons like chevrons, diamonds and fan shapes, or simple, graphic, two-color florals. The V&A Museum is a great resource to search for authentic designs from the 1920’s, and then to give your own spin on them to bring them into 2020. You can also read more about Art Deco in this Pattern Observer post.
Feel free to incorporate New Year’s themes into your collection as well if that direction feels inspiring to you–think fireworks, sparklers, champagne, confetti, etc. Have fun and don’t be afraid to make this a glitzy, glamorous and festive collection!

Pattern Planning and Goal Setting Group-Study
Sign up TODAY! Our Pattern Planning and Goal Setting Group-Study started on Monday, Dec. 9th, but there is still plenty of time to catch up.
In this Group-Study you’ll clarify what you hope to achieve in 2020 and create an action plan that is broken down into quarterly tasks to get you there. At the end of this course, you will feel focused and in control—ready for this upcoming year!
You’ll know exactly what steps to take and how you can use The Textile Design Lab to achieve the goals you’ve laid out before you.
We also have a live Goals Chat scheduled for this Wednesday, December 18th at 1om Eastern. A link will be sent out on the morning of the event.
2019 Holiday Doodle Challenge
We are kicking off a fun new holiday doodle event today, which will run through January 1st! The idea is that while so much holiday inspiration is around us at this time of year, it’s a great time to store up motifs for the future. It’s not uncommon to be asked to design a holiday-themed pattern in the summer, and then you’ll thank your past self for taking the time to document those ideas when they were fresh!
We encourage you to share your creations using #patternobserver and #textiledesignlab as Michelle will be sharing some highlights on the @patternobserver Instagram account.
Wishing you all a wonderful, creative holiday season!! -Chelsea
